Alaska Fishing Trips

The lodge where I guide during the summer is located 52 miles up the world- famous Alagnak River in the heart of some of the best rainbow trout and salmon fishing in the world. Because of the isolated location you will see more bears than other fishers unlike many other parts of Alaska where the conditions can be very crowded.

The rainbow fishing is a charge as they slam big leech and scuplin patterns (4 to 6 inches long) as well as eating mouse patterns. The mousing is great fun watching a big bow trying to eat the fly off the surface. From early in the season until the salmon have been spawning heavily the big flies work best but once the salmon spawn is in full swing fishing egg patterns become the most effective tactic.

In even years all five species of Pacific salmon enter the Alagnak. The sockeye arrive first with 2 to 3 million going by camp. The Kings and Chums follow. The Kings are brutes and require your heavies fly tackle, a lot of backing and some chasing with the boat. The Chums are great fun and aggressive to the fly. Millions of Pink salmon return in even years. And finally Silver salmon arrive. They are the most aggressive of the salmon attacking flies and putting on a great show.

There are also Doll Varden, Lake Trout, Grayling and Whitefish. The Dollies arrive about the same time as the Silvers and are a lot of fun to catch. The Lake Trout will pound the big flies you will be using for the Bows. Grayling are everywhere taking dry flies and on a 3 or 4 wt. are great fun.

Last 2011 Alaska Fishing Report: The season in Alaska ended with great fishing for silvers, dollies and rainbows.

The silver runs have been getting better every year and this year there were lots of them. Even though we are 52 miles inland, the silvers will still play on top. Wogs are very good and one of the best ways to locate active silvers. Wet flies work great as a follow up pattern. For silver here a sink tip isn't necessary. Rabbit and marabou flies in pink, fuchsia, purple, black, or a combination of those colors work best but flash flies in silver and red or silver and chartreuse were effective. Our silvers average 8 lbs with fish running to 15 lbs.

The dollie run this year was outstanding. They ran from 14 to 27 inches and are great fights on a five or six weight. The most effective approach is beading and they can become very picky as to bead color and size. They will also take small bright flies swung wet fly style. This summer the dollies surprise us by taking mouse patterns, tarantulas, and wogs.

The rainbow fishing became very good up on several small creeks where sockeye spawn. Again it was beading that was effective even though the rainbows can become very picky as to size and color, just like dollies. The average size of these rainbow is amazing. We had one that was 27 inches long and it had a 15 inch grith.
